Networking Through Contacts

I recently reached out to someone who works in the trading department at a boutique firm. We share many mutual friends so he was easy to get in contact with Joe (as we'll call him). I am meeting up with Joe soon and he isn't that high ranking wihin his firm and I was wanting to try to get in contact with some of his superiors that know other manangers in other departments. How should I go about this? I really want to have the best possible chance to land an internship there next summer and wanted to know some thoughts regarding my situation. I'm planning on cold calling/emailing some of the managers there pretty soon and think that knowing Joe might help my chances. Thanks!!
