So I have been searching up on linkedin for fellow alumnus that are at the firms that I am interested in applying. However, most of them are connected with my co-workers that also went to the same school that I did. I am afraid that if I reach out to these people, the first thing they would do is to contact my co-worker to get more information about me, etc.
How should I approach this situation? Should I talk to my co-worker up front that I will be contacting his friends about lateral opportunities and ask him/her to keep it between us?

I wouldn't say anything to your co-workers; generally speaking people know to keep these types of things confidential.
I would not ask the co-worker. Maybe only if he/she really likes you. Other than that keep it low key.
