Obligated to take job?
A little background: I'm currently working in the consulting division of a regional accounting firm. But, I am interested more towards the Asset Management side and would like to move out of the area (am basically in middle of nowhere).
I recently had a networking lunch with an individual and she thought of a close friend that she wants to pass my resume to who works in an investment advisory role. But, the catch is that it's still around this location.
I feel like this process will move fairly quickly so I'm asking ahead of time. If I interview and am offered a position there, would I be obligated to take the job since the contact went out of her way to help me out? In other words, would I be viewed as an a**hole if I decline?
Take it. Quit if you get another offer down the road in a better location.
Think of the current work environment: in a downturn, this firm wouldn't think for a second about firing you. Do what is best for you
The only allegiance you should have to any company is the one you launch yourself. Otherwise, you should only think about yourself in your career, not your firm. The firm will go on without you and will thrive, and will never hesitate to fire you if you are a liability to them. Do what's best for your career, keep it simple.
Don't go and interview for it if you wouldn't take it. It'll make your friend look bad.
Truth.
