"Personal" Contacts

I find that asking for your family to help you land a job in banking is like cheating on an exam. where is the honor in getting the SA/FT role by yourself? how do these people sleep at night?... i can sort of understand SEO and other diversity programs. Am I the only one who feels this way? I know this is a taboo subject but I just had to fucking get this off my chest.

It's irritating that people who do not deserve positions get them. A good friend of mine worked at McKinsey for two summers. He had a 2.8 from a non-target. In the end, if you don't possess the capabilities necessary to do a stellar job you will not be kept on the team. So don't sweat it--in general people end up where they belong.

As long as you work just as hard as everyone else why does it matter. Also, my contact have gotten me interviews, not straight offers.

"Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, for knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind. And greed, you mark my words, will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA."

This will happen at all levels of life. In the end things tend to plat out. At the analyst level just keep your head down and grind it out.

Play the cards you're dealt and don't' hate. I earned everything I've received without help. Do I care or fault other that haven't? No. If anything it annoys me when people don't use their resources to the maximum potential because there is a line of people that would love to have them. This reminds me of Good Will Hunting where Ben says he would kick Matts ass if was still a construction worker. If you have them use them if you don't work harder, you will be better for it anyway.

Are you only against family members getting you jobs/interviews? Or any type of personal contact helping you out (i.e. alumni)? I guess I can kind of agree with you on the former, as you have nothing to do with whether or not you are lucky enough to be born into a well connected family. But alumni contacts are a completely different situation in my book, as they are something you have to actually go out and make happen... they aren't just given to you.

talking about family members... yea im all for alumni trying to help you out cause like you said you still have to take the initiative and make them like you.

Barbarian, when your in high finance the personal relationships you tap into will come from your own set of "personal contacts" not mommy and daddy's.

It would be silly not to use family connections to get a job. Screw honor. This is the real world. I agree with whoever said it is more irritating to see people NOT utilize every connection they have. Someone with a family connection does not have to apologize to anyone. If you were in their shoes you would use the advantage so stop being jealous and find your own way into the industry. It can be done.

What makes you so damn resentful towards others who happen to have the relationship advantage? Honestly, that shit is pathetic and annoying. If you had a family member who has connections within IB, and you happen to want to break into IB, then you're telling me you would pretend it didn't exist and start calling random alumni instead? That's the stupidest shit I've heard all day. Here's some advice, stop letting your jealousy dictate your attitude, it makes you look like an asshole. You're just upset that you don't have those connections while others do. That's a terrible mentality to have pal.

hahahahaha

Yeah I used to think like this...then I was unemployed for a long time after graduating, decided to put pride in the far back seat, and then I finally got a job. The world doesn't care how you get a job (as long as your means are ethical of course), as long as you actually GET the job.

Remember Ving Rames from Pulp Fiction? Pride only hurts; it never helps.
