Network throughout the summer with alum, get your resume out at every MM and BB. You will likely be able to get FT interviews with all the mid/lower tier BB banks (DB, BOA, etc) and all of the MM banks (HL, WB, etc) if you network right. If you're lucky you may get a JPM/MS/GS interview too. This is all assuming your school really is a target and you're able to get alumni at each bank to forward your resume. Just focus on getting as much exposure to any kind of modeling you can even if its more basic credit models. Get ready to have 1-2 stories from you internship you can go through in interviews regarding modeling to prove you learned something. Have a good story for why you went with a commercial banking summer internship (besides that you couldn't land IB) and why you think you're more interested in IB.
Also doing commercial banking this summer. Going to work my ass off and learn as much as possible. Will try to get offer. Want to do it for 2 years than move into IB or another analyst gig. Anyone know what type of starting pay, bonus, etc looks like at a BB?
Commercial banking can be turned into FO for FT but it's going to come down to how well you can network during the summer, how well you can connect with some of your alumni in order to make sure you're getting your resume pulled, and if you secure a FT offer at your commercial banking gig (I feel that's critical and shows you're wanted to some degree.)
