Possible opportunities after a REPE internship in IB and PE ?
Hello everyone,
I have just found my end of Master's internship in the Real Estate Private Equity investment division of the family-office of a well esteemed bank in my home country.
Although i have a keen interest for the REPE sector, i am now wondering if i will pigeonhole myself with such niche experience so early (i am 22) ? Is there any chance that I could find a job as a junior in M&A, TS or even PE/Infra with this type of end-of-studies internship ?
My future tasks include taking part in deal screening, financial modelling of RE investments, financing research etc... so I hope this will still be possible.
Thanks!
Based on the most helpful WSO content, diving into a Real Estate Private Equity (REPE) internship at a family office can be a strong start to your career, especially if it's with a well-regarded bank in your home country. At 22, gaining niche experience in REPE can actually be a significant advantage, rather than a limitation. Here's how this experience can open doors in other areas of finance:
Transferable Skills: The skills you'll develop, such as deal screening, financial modeling, and financing research, are highly transferable to other areas of finance. These core competencies are valued across M&A, Transaction Services (TS), and even broader PE/Infrastructure roles.
Networking and Exposure: Working in a family office, especially within a bank, can provide you with networking opportunities that could lead to roles in other departments or firms. The real estate sector often intersects with various other sectors, offering a chance to build a diverse professional network.
Understanding of Real Estate Sector: Having a deep understanding of the real estate sector can be a unique selling point. For roles in M&A and PE that deal with real estate transactions or companies with significant real estate holdings, your expertise could make you a valuable asset.
Flexibility for Future Moves: The experience gained in REPE can serve as a strong foundation for moving into other areas of finance later on. Many professionals in finance have successfully transitioned between sectors by leveraging their initial experiences and networks.
Market Demand: The demand for professionals with solid financial modeling skills and an understanding of investment processes is consistent across the finance industry. Your experience in REPE will demonstrate your ability to analyze investments, a skill that is universally appreciated.
In conclusion, your internship in REPE should not pigeonhole you but rather provide a robust platform from which you can explore various paths in finance. It's important to continue building your skill set, network effectively, and remain open to opportunities within and adjacent to your current field.
