Proof of Income for new job

Can you folks share your experiences regarding proof of previous income required by both large and small IB and PE firms? I worked with a small shop and last two years things went south as we did not raise the next fund due to 08. I had to choose between looking for another job (right after 08) or accept joke base (20K) plus almost half of all success/retainer fees on my deals. Problem is that I got practically nothing in last two years (unless I was cheated by the house) and we finally closed. Will the employer buy this story? Don't feel like I want to lie about income for last 2 years, but can I get stuck if I tell the truth? Any ideas very much appreciated
