Prospective HF doing spywork on me?
So, I'm dealing with a very weird situation. A megafund that somehow had my resume reached out to me, asking if I was interested in speaking to them about an open position. I said yes, they set up a phone interview. I never submitted a formal employment application.
A few days later, I find myself getting questions from my current employer and emails from past employers, and other organizations I'm affiliated with. Though they didn't specify who, they told me someone has been calling them, asking for details about me. I can't say with 100% certainty that it's the fund, but the fund is the only place I'm "interviewing" formally.
That being said, I haven't interviewed with them yet and haven't even spoken to someone on the phone. They never gave me any indication they would call people, I never supplied them with "references." Should I run while I can? Or is this standard protocol? Interview w/ partner coming up this week.
That's weird and way out of line on their part. If you get shit at your current job I'd just tell them the truth: they found your resume online, probably through LinkedIn, contacted you and asked if you wanted to talk. I don't know your current situation but if you're a typical 2 year analyst no one would be surprised if you're talking to companies but it's usually good policy to tell your current employer that firms may contact them for employment verification, but that you haven't even talked to them yet so you had no idea they'd be calling. Even if you're not a 2 year and out person I'd tell them the same thing. Not too many people would be surprised that you'd take a call from a MF.
But if it freaks you out about the fund, weigh how much you'd like to work there with how weird it was that they did this.
