Pursuing Freshman/Sophomore IB/Consulting internships overseas in Emerging Markets?

So I'm at a target/top-semitarget, and I've been looking at some of the older students and alumni at my school, and I've noticed a few who've done internships in emerging markets (probably because its difficult/impossible to land IB/PE during the first year). For example, one did consulting in South Africa and another worked at an IB in China (No, he was an American double-majoring in Chinese so probably not because of connections). Is this a common/interesting/cool thing to do if you don't just want to get a PWM internship? Preferably, I'd like to do something like nonprofit consulting but that is difficult to find so asking about this..
