Recruiters don’t follow up

Why do recruiters say they’ll put me in touch with another person at the firm, but never do? I have had two interviews/screening calls now where the person on the opposite end says they will put me in contact with another person for the next step, but they never do. When I follow up, there is no reply?

Why do people do this? Why not just say they are not interested?

Recruiters are not the most reliable in terms of job search. Consider them one avenue to utilize (if need be) in your process.

From experience, I have a severe distrust of recruiters (except for literally one recruiter who has given me great counsel in the past even though I never landed a job through that person's agency). My thought process for recruiters are:

  • Recruiter outside of the Company: I would literally find the job posting they are reaching out for if I can find it and apply directly. I basically do not engage with these recruiters at this point in my career. I have been better off applying directly online than using these recruiters
  • Recruiter on behalf of the Company: This is a different conversation given the person is reaching out as an employee of the firm so I can be a little more assured proceeding in process with the firm (that is not to say I haven't had company recruiters stop responding in process or other things happen)

Take recruiters with a grain of salt and keep pressing on.
