Restructuring/Credit related roles for sophomores
Non-diversity freshman here, obviously BB soph summer roles are out of the question. I had the chance to do research at my school on bankruptcy, and it kinda made me fall in love with the idea of restructuring? Just sounds really cool to me tbh.
I know the typical route is startups/boutique banks/smaller PE funds, but are there any credit/rx related opportunities that would be open to taking sophomores?
You could try getting an RX focused role at a boutique or try to network around with people you have connections to at credit funds, know people who did both
Appreciate the advice! Will definitely try reaching out to alums at some smaller credit funds.
In terms of finding boutiques that have an Rx practice, any resources you'd recommend apart from google? Not sure if there are a ton of alums in that space, so I'll need to cold email.
A few I've seen:
-BB S&T internship on credit related desk, lots of non-diverse kids do this sophomore year
-Interning at restructuring news provider (Debtwire / Reorg / Petition11)
-Interning at covenant services provider (Cov review / Xtract)
-Interning as a paralegal in restructuring law (though if I had to guess, this probably required daddy pulling some strings)
Good luck! To be clear, when I was screening resumes, I never gave extra points to someone with a restructuring internship vs. someone with a PWM or corp fin internship. Given how technical interviews and even networking calls get in restructuring, you'll have every chance to demonstrate your interest in the field.
You can try to get something credit related:
Corporate banking or commercial banking
Even credit risk at a bank sophomore year would lend itself to the type of skillset needed in Rx.
In credit risk you’d learn about how to look at a a capital structure look at riskiness of cash flows and read credit docs.
