Should OP write about independent reading on his cover letter as a way express interest in the position or should he just tell the hr rep that he has x,y,z skills that the firm needs?
Also, OP, your student organization description is vague. Unless the name you put on the real resume is descriptive of what your organization does, it is going to leave people confused.
