Rise from the bottom

I'm at an internship right now working full-time which a temporary position for three months. I recently graduated so I can't mess this up.

The internship is at a boutique investment banking firm. My duties here are very nominal. I pretty much cold call all day long. There are only four other guys that work alongside the team namely two managing directors, one principal and a seasoned analyst.

When I first entered the possibility of a full-time position was mentioned. But after seeing what I do and the needs of the business I doubt it's possible (I'm actually sharing the MD's office).

I need some insight on how to leverage my current position to further my career. What and how do I tell my managing director to introduce me to other firms for interviews or to work at another investment bank or PE firm? I know I won't be offered a position so I need to know how to speak with my MD to introduce me to other firms for a FT position.

Anyone with some good insight? Anyone been in a similar position before?

I think its a bad idea to ask them to introduce to other companies because everyone is in competition. They might be glad to recommend you to other people if they thought you were a good employee/intern but then again if they thought that they would hire you themselves. I would ask the MD to lunch and tell him/her how you feel. Ask if they are pleased with the work your doing and if there's anyway to get better at it.

I doubt they plan on hiring me. The firm is very small and they share the office space with another firm also. Besides I don't want to work in a place where all I do is cold calling.

Try branching out to other firms on your own if you don't think they will give you a job. But I wouldn't broadcast because in the end you never know.

When did you start and when does it end? Take the MDs and principal out to get coffee (individually) and express to them your desire to start your career in IB. Ask them if it's realistic for you to stay after the 3 months. If not, ask for advice, express your gratitude and ask them if they have other contacts they know that might be hiring, but don't not ask them at all. I just said ask too many times, but seriously, don't listen to Tarique3. Your bosses know how the game is played, so keeping an open dialogue with them will not hurt.

Very good; still too early to start asking them for other connections/pump them for a job, but ease in to it. And worst case scenario is 1) they don't hire you and 2) don't help you in the job hunt process. 2) is not likely if you perform competently, have a good attitude, and work hard. If 2) really is looking bleak, just make sure you can get a good rec. That on top of IB experience is always good for the ol CV.
