Rising Sophomore going for IB - unsure where to direct my efforts

Got great advice on my last question regarding sophomore summer internships and their importance and was hoping to get some more.

After this summer, it's looking like my freshman year "Private Equity" internship experience is going to give me little to talk about. I did some basic qualitative deal sourcing, looked over some CIMs, but was given almost no work this summer and might as well have been unemployed. I am going to have to make mountains out of mole hills to make this sound like anything worthwhile.

I want to recruit at BB/EB next year, have a 3.9+, semi target, good extracurriculars, all that, but unsure where to go from here. Is it essential to try to recruit for a fall/spring boutique IB internship? I'll have finance/non finance extracurriculars already on my resume. Would it be better to focus on networking and my grades? Thanks.
