Salary Question by Recruiters

I keep getting asked salary questions by recruiters. Is this normal? It always makes me feel weird and refusing makes it seem like I have something to hide.

I am in a London bank. Does anyone have any way to navigate this?

Not had to deal with it personally but two things spring to mind, firstly, don’t lie or try to misrepresent/inflate - there was a thread a few weeks/months back and it never ends well.

I wouldn’t expect a recruiter to ask why it is what it is, but just be cautious of trying to spin it too much, you never know if they have spoken to other candidates from your current place/group.
