School in Midwest, Internship in NYC?

First post here on WSO, though I've been following for a few months. Basically, I am starting to network and look into BB and MM investment banks that I would like to be a summer intern for in 2012. I hope to work in NYC as I live in a near suburb, but go to school (non-target) in the Midwest. I'm wondering if this is possible to do if the only times I'll be home to interview with firms are over Thanksgiving, Christmas, and possibly Spring break. Would it be possible to interview at a nearby Midwest branch for an SA position in NYC? Has anyone had a similar dilemma?

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Don't worry. Lots of schools are not near NYC. All that matters is that you network when you are around (e.g., this summer, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.) so that you will be picked for first-round interviews (usually via telephone) and later second-round interviews (which will be expensed by the banks).
