Should I study a bit before starting to network?

I'm getting real tired of sounding stupid and running out of things to say when I reach out to people. I'm coming from a non-finance background and I'm honestly just aiming for a career within risk/credit management as a credit analyst or underwriter, nothing out of the ordinary.

But I never know what I'm talking about and I'm so tired of asking the generic questions and not knowing how to follow up! Is this similar to a lot of other people's experiences? Should I just take a few months to myself to study before reaching out again? I mean assuming I get in touch with someone anyways I'd eventually have to know enough technicals to do an interview right?
