Small reputable investment firms in NYC

Can anyone recommend a few small investment firms in NYC that are reputable? It's difficult to break into these large investment banks with my background so I want to develop some quality back ups. Small places where I can learn investment analysis and possibly transition to better firms later on. Spoke to some MDs at large firms who said you'd probably learn more at smaller firms anyway. Appreciate any help, thanks

Most people look to switch out from I banks to small investment firms, not the other way around.

The grass is always greener on the other side; or is it?
