Sophomore offer help: BB S&T or Boutique IB?

Looking for advice deciding between summer internships. Does anyone have experience choosing between BB S&T sophomore program vs. a MM/boutique IB if the end goal is BB IBD junior year?  Worried about S&T making for a difficult “why IB” question when recruiting next year. Also, do people ever transfer divisions internally? Thanks for insight.

As a sophomore I'd go with the BB S&T, even if the other offer is IB (I'm assuming this is not a well-known IB firm). BB S&T as a soph isn't easy to get and the brand name will be huge in getting yourself looks almost anywhere for junior recruiting. Also if anything, it will help your "why IB"  as you can tailor your answer to make it seem you're better suited for IB rather than S&T. Good luck - you're in a good spot.

Consider when the internships will start. If both start during the summer, then go with the strongest brand name because recruiting will begin in a few months - well before you get any experience on the desk at either internship. If you could get experience at an investment bank right now, it would be helpful for interview questions and give you good rationale for 'why banking'. I was working at a boutique from the fall of my sophomore year and it helped during recruiting because all the interviews centered on the deals I worked on.

Sounds like they're both summer, though, in which case the BB will do more for you in recruiting. It's also worth mentioning that a structured program at a large bank is good experience to have compared to the more common ad hoc experiences that a lot of kids end up having at 10-man-shops their sophomore summer. Good spot to be in, though. It seems you're setting yourself up for success.
