Staying at your SA firm for a fall internship

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone has ever continued working into the fall at their summer firm. I'm currently a sophomore at a large Asset Management firm that has a structured summer program and was wondering if it would be possible to work during the fall part time. I don't necessarily want to stay in my current group and would like to work in another group during the fall in order to get a different experience (I really like my current group, but just want more varied experience). I've been networking pretty hard with the groups I am interested in and was wondering if this is even possible. Should I try to stay in my current group? Are fall internships only possible at smaller firms with no structured summer programs? Thanks in advance for the help.

I think one of the lessons to be learned from WSO, is that you can network your way into almost anything.

Start asking senior employees if they have ever done fall internships, if yes, say you would be interested, if no, ask if they would consider it. Work hard, work smart, make friends, and even if they don't/won't give you a fall internship, they might know of another firm that does.

Exactly, and OP just ask, i'm currently working at a large AM firm right now and my internship ends whenever i want it to during the month of August. I asked one of the managers if it would be possible to be part time during the school year, as long as it's at least 16 hours.

so dude just ask your manager and i'm sure if you've been doing well, you'll get a thumbs up to stay for the fall.

For the past few weeks I've been thinking of asking, but a friend told me it would make me look bad. His reasoning was that if I have a summer position, asking or looking for a fall position might make it look like I'm not focused on my current one. I am just afraid of casting myself in a bad light. Also, I finally brought this up with my unofficial mentor, and he said I should be honest about my goals and talk to my boss about it. I just wanted a couple of other opinions before I bring it up. Also, I do know how important networking is because it's how I managed to get my current summer position. Thanks for the input.
