Student veteran looking for summer internship

I recently finished my enlisted service in the military and have been accepted to a target school (undergrad). I will be starting in January as either a freshman or if I'm lucky a sophomore depending on how many of my credits transfer.

I want to work in IB, so I'm eager to get some experience over the summer. I figure I at least need to build a gpa at my new school before inquiring anywhere, so will waiting until spring be my best bet? Or is it never too early to start networking?
