Summer Analyst Exit

What’s up, first time on WSO. I have a summer offer for S&T and my question is how can I transition into IB or ER for full time in a different city? I want to make a jump from NY to Chicago for full time and I wanted to know if anyone here has been successful in doing so and what their experiences have been. Appreciate any and all feedback.

Not super complicated and there’s no special advice to approaching this. You just need to start networking, get a return offer, and hope that the groups where you have contacts have spots to fill.

I personally waited until about 1/3-1/2 way through the internship to start recruiting (bad look to want to leave your current role before you start), and reached out to people from the same and different banks. I then let all of these contacts know when I got a return offer and said that “although I enjoyed my experience in XYZ this summer I think ABC is a better fit”.

groups don’t normally know what their hiring needs are until interns have accepted/rejected their return offers (august, September) and its only at that point where interviews can begin

It's possible but not common, S&T is really different from IB and you'll be competing against people with IB return offers. Also, switching both division and location is a little tricky, and you should have ties (family or went to college) to the Chicago area.

Hopefully you're at a BB which are better about internal mobility / will take care of you a bit more. You need to network hard right as your internship starts and have a solid why for the switch.
