Summer Internship for rising Jr.

I am currently a sophomore in college and want to get into Private Equity. What is the best way to go about trying to get an internship? Should I simply contact as many firms as possible and see if they have any openings or would it be a complete lost cause? How much does it matter to have internships directly in private equity or should I focus on just anything IB and move to private equity when I can? I know most go IB and move to PE later in their career how common is it to start in PE? Any suggestions on what to do would appreciated and what the best route to take is.
