switching locations after sa

i've seen a few people on linkedin switch locations after their sa at a variety of firms, both bb and eb. i've mostly seen la to ny and sf/menlo park to ny, with some houston/chicago to ny too. how do you pull this off discreetly and successfully. should you wait until after your return offer to bring it up? should you talk to hr or your higher ups about it?

Network with some analysts/associates in your desired location over the summer with the reason being pure curiosity. Try to cross check with LinkedIn to see if they’re connected with people in your office. After you get the return offer, then you can ask to transfer but definitely do not mention it to other interns / full-timers in your group.

Ok that makes sense. So after getting the return offer I should ask hr to transfer? What reason should I give them - my only real reason is I grew up and went to school in California and want to experience something else, especially since I have a lot of friends in nyc. What would be the most compelling way to make my case?

Honestly personal reasons, in my opinion, are harder to justify than career reasons. You should try to transfer to a different group than your SA office. After getting the return offer try to hop on the phone ASAP with an analyst/associate and be very clear about your intent, even better if you have the staffer’s contact. If that doesn’t work within a few days then reach out to HR; if your group tries to reach out to you and ask why you didn’t sign then just give vague reasons but don’t say anything about wanting to transfer.

Yeah that makes sense. My goal is to make friends w some of the New York interns during training week and hope that they can also put me in contact with the right people. And also I would have to switch groups anyway most likely - on the west coast it would be tech but their tech practice on the east coast is rly limited so I’d probably do something else. How do I justify wanting to switch groups though? Also isn’t it risky if I reach out to the staffer and they tell someone in my group? Could my offer get pulled?

Justify with interest in industry or product group. Once you have the offer, my guess (and based off what I've heard/read when I was in your situation) is that your offer probbaly won't get pulled and the staffer has a legitimate responsibility to not go around telling people your aspirations to transfer especially when that's not a guaranteed thing. I've learned from my summer experience that a lot of bankers are very understanding of the fact that this is a career and you do what's best for you, so generally people will respect that.
