Target Business School, 3.1 GPA, NO SUMMER INTERNSHIP LUCK!! Need advice

I am a Junior finance major at an undergraduate business school that is not a universal target school, but for the most part is a target school at the majority of firms. Here are the 3 main details of my resume that stand out:
- 3.1 GPA ... below the general cutoffs of 3.2 and beyond
- Division 1 varsity athlete on a championship caliber team in my sport
- no relevant work experience in the financial services industry

I have applied to many, many internships and have had zero requests for interviews. I have reached out to plenty of people (alumni, other contacts), and they have not been particularly helpful either. I've also used my career center to its fullest extent.

I'm looking to get into S&T (as I've deduced that I-banking and capital markets probably is unattainable) because that is where I think I have the best chance at getting a spot. I have also sat in on a bunch of desks, and I love the interactive atmosphere of it all.

Why I made this post:
- What types of places should I apply to? Are there any firms that have a 3.0 or 3.1 minimum?
- Is there something I am doing wrong in trying to find an internship?
- Do I consider working for free somewhere? And how do I approach that/what would I do in that role?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
