Thank you follow up letter

Hello guys,

Sent a letter of interest to a MD at a small PE firm.. got an email back from an ascosiate saying thanks for interest, could you please send CV. I sent CV, waited a week, and just called to follow up with the ascosiate.

First they said they are still deciding whether to take summer interns or not.. then they said, "if you have a few minutes could I ask you some questions?", so I basically got an impromptu interview... got the question why should we hire you, etc. I was put on the spot, as I wasn't expecting an interview, so it was difficult.

They said they will check with their team next week to see if there will be capability to take an intern, etc and asked me to follow up next week. Should I send a thank you letter later today anyway, or wait until next week to follow up?

thanks.
