The next best internship?

Next year, I will have to get a work experience in London from April-August for my (business) course. I will be in 2nd year. Im guessing it will have to be off-cycle due to the dates. Because Im in 2nd year, Im doubting that an IB would give me an off-cycle internship (My college is also a non-target). So, my question is, what is the next best thing to get an internship in that will help me get work at IBs in the future? PWM? Hedge funds? (I was hoping to get into the Research or M&A dept of an IB in the future)

I was looking into that, I understand theres loads in London, but I thought they were quite picky too.. Its worth a try, though. Im guessing most wouldnt have a set application procedure so would it be best to just email CV w/ cover letter, or should I go cold calling?

Then I'd say better to cold call than email, it's harder for them to ignore you. If you email them, include the cover letter as the text of the email itself and the CV attached. Keep trying through linkedin, or ask in your university if they can help you. Also, if you are going that route, I would try to find the smallest shop possible. Try also PWM, that is achievable as a sophomore if you have a good cv, and big places do have off-cycle interns.
