Things that kill your outreach email

Please feel free to add others. But if you are getting really bad results consider if you are doing any of these. Often I see more bad outreach than good. But also if I ever respond given like most bankers I get multiple inbounds a day, if you choose to reach out your execution  has to be perfect for me to consider helping you recruit.

-Messaging at weird times (Friday afternoon to Monday mid day I would avoid I am not responding to anything on the weekend) also keep messages to business hours during the week

-Following up when I don’t respond in 24 hours. Also if I haven’t responded after 3-4 follow-ups you should expect that I am not going to respond but now I will remember you for the wrong reasons if you get traction elsewhere and I have to opine

-Extreme ass kissing, mostly with ChatGPT slop

-I am an MBA associate, so generally I don’t speak to people looking to lateral into IB from another job unless they are also an MBA student

-Getting any details wrong (spelling my name, my firm, etc.)

-Telling people at your school I responded to your coffee chat. When they all spam me after our call because they think I will respond it shortchanged your own outreach

-Lastly, if we have nothing in common (school, other network in common). I am the most sympathetic to people who message me without anything in common but I am definitely not responding when it’s combined with one of the other points I am making.
