Tier 2 city PE recruiting

I currently work at a BB/EB in a tier 2 city (think of LA/CHI/BOS). I realized banking isn't for me long term and am thinking to do PE recruiting. However, being in a tier 2 city I understand that PE on-cycle would be difficult given many PE shops are in NYC. Should I try to lateral to a BB/EB in NYC first and then do PE recruiting? Or it would be doable to do PE recruiting in my tier 2 city?

Thanks! Do you think my chances of landing a decent PE shot significantly lower than my NYC peers though? Is it worth if for me to lateral to NYC do banking for another year before PE recruiting?
