Total comp vs base salary
Do people talk about their TC or BS? Do the MDs like to talk more about their 500k base or their 1m comp?

What are you saying/asking?
People don’t just sit around discussing their comp and they don’t “like” to discuss either.
Which is more important? Total comp, at many firms (in the HF side) base comp will be capped relatively low, but the bonus will be multiples of the base. Of course nothing is guaranteed so it is important to know what you can count on year to year, but that is usually a small fraction of what you take home.
But again, what are you trying to understand?
