Trade-off/Dilemma

Hi guys, I go to a semi-target (Cal/Michigan), current have a 3.5 in Industrial Engineering (I know.. low), and my main goal is S&T/Research.

Last summer (sophomore) I worked at the commodities arm of a BB as a business analyst in the market technology division, our team sit by the traders on the trade floor (while typical programmers and BO sit a floor below us). We basically identify business needs and come up with solutions on the fly during the day. We monitor hedges, market data, trades and models and identify anomolies throughout the day and are involved with the PNL work. We work with the structuring folks setting up indices and rolling schedules. We also work with the research and quant folks a lot.

My boss last summer told me that if I want to return all I have to do is contact him and he will talk to the right people and I'll be able to come back so I am fairly confident with that front. I remember talking to HR last summer about applying for S&T and research this year and they said they can pass my resume to the recruiter for S&T/Research. They said they guarantee that it will be read but they cant guarantee that I will have an interview. This is the caveat, by applying to S&T/research I'll take my name out of the eligible return intern pool for market technology because if I were to return I would have to accept a return offer before S&T/research internship recruiting even start.

The situation is simple. Either sure return to technology or a slightly better chance to get my resume read for S&T/Research (I assume the chance is slightly better than resume drop because it's internal? I could be off on that)..

Pretend that you were me, with my background/school/gpa in mind, would you gamble a sure technology internship for a possible interview for S&T or Research? Part of me thinks that having an internship secured is better than having none, while the other part of me think that I will regret it if I settle for less than what I want.

So I think it is a risk/reward analysis and it's totally based on how likely I will get an interview based on my school/gpa(low)/major/experience. It obviously also depends on how likely I will score S&T/research interviews at other firms because I will definitely take any S&T/research over returning to tech (and by probability to more interviews I score the more chance I will land one and not have to depend on returning). So what do you guys think?

Obvious choice. Can't see why anyone would choose Market Technology.
That is not my point...

and I don't think I can get it extended. It has nothing to do with an extension. I was told something along the line that that once you apply for another division in the same firm you are automatically pulled out of the return intern pool, which is why I am having this dilemma.

Given this summer will be my junior summer, I obviously want as good an internship as I can get, but I also dont want to be out of an internship because that would be the worst case scenario. Therefore the question I really want answered is if you guys think my background/gpa/school/major etc combined will give me at least a somewhat decent chance to get several interviews to worth take this risk or should I just take the safe route and at least have a job..

Can you talk to your former manager and ask him to extend the acceptance deadline? Explain the situation honestly and frame it as you wanting to try something different (don't insinuate that you didn't like his group).
