This is just my own guess as I have no idea about the financial industry over there, but I would imagine the non-existence of the CFA degree (~300 holders as you say) would suggest it would be less useful. Getting the CFA will not hurt you, but you might be better off with spending your time networking and studying for the GMAT than studying the 900 hours to get a designation that MIGHT be applicable.
