Wharton UPenn VS UPenn CAS : Physics business in technology concentration

Hi , im a British high school senior who wants to break into IB/PE/Consulting in the UK

I am pretty set on ED at Penn but have a pretty physics geared profile (published astrophysics research , internships and shit at aerospace companies e.t.c.) with a couple business related ECs like research related also tho (research in microfinance industry) among a bunch of other ECs. My stats are in Ivy League range also 35 ACT , 5 A levels with A*s.

My question is about whether going to this physics concentration in business and tech would cost me recruitment significantly?

Thanks for any responses !

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights regarding your situation:

  1. Recruitment Challenges for International Students:

    • Disadvantage in Recruiting: As an international student, you will face two main disadvantages:
      • Fewer Applications: You can apply to fewer banks, reducing your chances of receiving an offer.
      • Sponsorship Costs: Banks may prefer U.S. citizens over international students due to the costs associated with hiring immigration lawyers for H-1B sponsorships.
  2. Visa and Sponsorship Considerations:

    • Early Disclosure: It's crucial to disclose your visa status early in the recruitment process. Tricking a bank into giving you an offer without disclosing your status can lead to rescinded offers.
    • Research Sponsorship Policies: Use resources like https://www.h1bdata.info/</a">H1Bdata.info to check if firms have sponsored H-1B visas in recent years. This can help you target firms more likely to sponsor international students.
  3. Program Selection:

    • Physics vs. Business Concentration: While a physics concentration in business and technology might seem less directly aligned with IB/PE/Consulting, it can still be valuable if you leverage your unique background effectively.
    • MandT Program: The Management and Technology (MandT) program at UPenn is highly competitive but offers a strong combination of business and technical education, which can be advantageous in recruitment. However, the lower acceptance rate is a significant consideration.
  4. Networking and Preparation:

    • Network More: Given the additional challenges, you need to network more aggressively and prepare harder to stand out as an undeniably strong candidate.
    • Leverage Unique Background: Use your unique background in physics and aerospace to differentiate yourself. Highlight how your analytical and technical skills can add value in finance roles.
  5. Alternative Strategies:

    • Consider Broader Recruiting Efforts: If the chances of breaking into IB/PE/Consulting seem slim, consider broadening your recruiting efforts to include other finance roles or industries where your background might be more appreciated.

In summary, while the physics concentration in business and technology might not be the traditional path for IB/PE/Consulting, with strategic networking, early visa status disclosure, and leveraging your unique background, you can still position yourself effectively for recruitment. The MandT program, despite its lower acceptance rate, could offer a more direct path but requires careful consideration of your chances of admission.
