What do I say..?

I'm currently an intern at a boutique investment bank and am looking to land a FT at a BB this coming fall. I interned at a regional BB in the spring and took the time to reach out to a lot of the people so I have their contact information, BUT what do I say to them? Is it appropriate if I ask them if they could refer me to someone else to talk to (I'm current interning in a different city)? Or do I just update them on what I've been doing? What kind of questions should I ask?

Maybe it's just me, but it feels odd for me to randomly email and say, "Hi, just wanted to touch base blahblah I'm interning here blahblah..." I feel like I need to ask them a question so they have something they can respond to easily.

Any help is appreciated!

Hey so and so,

So and so this is explosions09 I was in an intern in your office from date to date. I am starting to look for full-time positions now that I am about to graduate and I'm wondering if you are looking for analysts in your group or know anyone who is? Let me know if you need me to send an updated resume or need any additional info. Thanks in advance and I look forward to hearing back from you.

OP - you don't need to be so formal. Depending on how much interaction you had with your contact - obviously you would be considerably more formal with an MD you only spoke to twice - maybe something more like this:

From: OP To: Contact@BB.com

Mr. Contact, I interned in your office [or whatever adjacent office] this fall - thanks for offering to stay in touch. Since then, I've started as a summer analyst with a [group-type] group in City, and the experience I gained with [BB firm] has been a huge benefit. As I approach my final year of school, I'm beginning to look towards full-time recruiting with [BB firm]. If you're available for a brief chat in the next few days, I'd love to set up a phone call and get your perspective. I can be reached via this email address, or my cell (555-555-5555).

Thanks for your help, First Name
