Hey, I'm a sophomore trying to land a summer internship. Through my networking I was able to contact someone who seemed interested in taking me on as an intern. However, some issues came up and the state of the firm was iffy, so he said he'd get back to me. This was about a month ago, so I'm just wondering when I should follow up? In the meantime I've been looking and applying elsewhere. I wanted to potentially get an offer first and use that as an excuse to update him but I don't know when/if that's going to happen.

you should definitely reach out. let him know that you're still interested, and you'd love to speak with him, even if just to get his advice on how to go about your job search.
Same. Contact him, express your interest and say that you'd appreciate any further advice he could give you for external applications in case they can't take you.
A month ago? He's half forgotten about you. You should have followed up the following week, at most.
