Work for Free?

Hello fellow monkeys,

I am a Senior in undergrad that will be graduating in May 2015.

I have a specific question about asking for an unpaid internship. I have an informational interview with the MD of a boutique IB/consulting hybrid firm next week. The firm is right around the corner from my apartment and would be a perfect situation for me to intern for my last winter break of college if they have enough work to go around. From searching on LinkedIn, it looks like they have hired off cycle inters into FT before. I have my finances in line and would not mind interning here paid or unpaid for 6 weeks or so. However I do not want to be pushy and pull the trigger about "a job" on the first date.

Assuming I do not knock it out of the park and get offered a internship on the spot, when do I ask about the unpaid internship possibility.

1.) At the end of the interview if I am getting buy signs
2.) In an Email w/in 24 hours after the info interview
3.) Over the phone after the interview
4.) Via handwritten note in mail afterwards
5.) Wait patiently and sit on my hands

Thank you for your help in advance.
