Worth it? - Applied for an OCR position

I recently applied for an OCR position that I'm very interested in--went to the info session, wrote a nice cover letter, etc. I was almost positive I would at least get the first round interview, but my school's OCR allows employers to select alternates for interviews and I was marked as one (i.e. if someone else doesn't sign up for an interview, I can).

Problem is that the odds of a interview time slot opening up are slim to none, so my question is: do you guys think it'd be worth emailing the manager that came to the info session and/or the HR contact listed on the job post to express my interest? This is a job that I'd almost definitely accept if extended an offer and I'm of the camp that it can't hurt to ask (worst they can say is no, right?), but I was wondering what you guys think?

Seeing that you got alternative-ed, doesn't hurt to contact the guy. If you don't, you might end up with nothing. At least contacting him will give you a fighting chance.
