Would It be awkward to add person of interest in Linkedin without prior contact?

I'm aiming to spread my network in the industry so I hit a few boutique names in the search bar and found a few alumni of my school. I was able to find/guess of a few the email adress, not all though. Now the issue is that I haven't got LinkedIn premium so I can't send inMails. Would it be creepy if I add them and send a intruduction letter afterwards?

Add them and in the message box indicate Friends and send a short message. Most people are ok with this. Don't go nuts though as some people will click they don't know you and after I think 3-4 times of this happening you'll have your random add powers restricted.

Part of the connection request is that you can put down that you went to school together. Then in the message box you can say a short message because it's character limited, along the lines of "Hi, we went to school together, I'm interested in the industry and would like to talk sometime"
