Would working at a local bank be ok for experience?

Hi,

(sorry if this is in the wrong section I wasn't sure where to put it to be honest.)

I'll be quick I know everyone is busy; so would applying at my local bank for an internship be good experience for investment banking? If so, should I apply for a certain position, and if so, which positions would be ideal?

(by the way, when I say 'apply' i really mean I'm going to go up to the manager and ask him if I can work for him for free (like an internship, i think))

Thanks in advance for the help everyone. Please let me know if you'd like additional details.

Hi mastertrader89,

I just finished my second year at university. I'm not sure what position I should ask to work in. Do you think they will let me work in PWM with no experience? Remember, I'm just going to go up to the manager and tell him I can work for him for free for the experience.

PWM is very possible with no prior experience; it's usually the first experience college folks go for.

Yes. I don't know where you live or your personal circumstances, but you should consider being mobile this summer to get something to put yourself in contention for the all important Junior year internship. It's super competitive out there. There's still plenty of finance internships available for sophomores. Try sites like Indeed and do some cold calling. A teller job won't help you very much in getting an IB internship next summer.

@characterdefects ok I'll try to do some research on PWM @mastertrader89 I'm from Canada, Ottawa - not a very big city - I believe most of the IB jobs in Canada are in Toronto, I don't believe there are many IB internship opportunities where I live.

So you guys think it's entirely possible for me to apply to work for free in PWM with no prior work experience eh? I'll definitely try do so! I assume that my local bank (one of the big 5 banks in Canada) would have such positions available, but I'll have to do some research to make sure first...

If you guys have any more advice about the subject please throw it my way! And thank you very much for the help you've already given me.

Toronto is the biggest, but as an outsider looking in, I've seen a lot of jobs posted for Calgary. I'm pretty interested in energy trading, so I've been mostly looking for opportunities in Texas, but I've gotten the impression that Calgary is kind of Canada's energy hub. There might be opportunities there as well, particularly if you're interested in the energy industry.
