Academic Advise
Hey guys,
Sorry this is exceptionally poor writing (need to run to class),
I'm a sophomore financial economics and accounting minor at a small liberal arts college. I've been extremely interested in investment banking although growing out of this phase as many people say it's a career path that will tear you apart mentally. Anyway, the reason why I'm writing is for academic advise. I'm a sophomore with little work experience on my resume and looking to apply for local spring and summer internships in hopes of landing a more prestigious internship my junior year summer. The downside is my GPA. The summer before college I was diagnosed with a very severe case of mononucleosis (my 2nd time). I lost over 35 pounds in this summer, had countless blood work done, ultra sounds, and slept for over 18 hours a day. My school told me not to attend my first semester at college but I didn't want to fall behind so I went anyways. I did terrible. I'm regretting this now. I suffered through waking up at 6:30 AM for my NCAA varsity sport, going to class, and paying attention. I ended with a 2.7 GPA. After my first semester, my mono tested negative. Although the test results stated it was out of my system, it's not. Mono stays in your system for 6-8 months afterwards making you feel very sluggish and tired all day everyday. I didn't want this to get in my way, so I started my second semester and was doing great. I received some of the highest scores in my statistics class and my econ classes. I was on my way to recovering my 2.7 GPA until a family member of mine was in a serious car accident. My family member couldn't speak for over a month, had 2nd and 3rd degree burns, and obviously had brain damage. I remember speaking to him on the phone after 2 weeks in the hospital, he had a seizure on the phone and was rushed back again. Luckily today, he can speak, although stuttered for months, doesn't anymore except during sleep. I flew home during school to care for this person and my grades were dropping severely. I had to manage the possible lingering absence of my friend while playing a NCAA sport plus academics. Although the car accident was last spring, he is scheduled for brain surgery this summer. I ended up with a 2.67 GPA. Skip a few months and now i'm on track to a 3.6-3.8 GPA. Although this is a good GPA, it will likely bring me up just past a 3.1ish. The clases I'm taking now are much higher difficulty than my freshman year courses. I just wish I could retake those. Since i'm at a liberal arts school, I was thinking of transferring in hopes some of my classes will be dropped therefore erase from my transcript/GPA. I'm not sure what to do at this point but to keep fighting the fight. I have connections at UBS from my uncle who is a VP of WM but I would hate working with family. Currently, I'm reaching out to alumni for spring and summer internships. If this fails, I will cold call small firms to gain some work related experience. Although I want to work in finance and banking, I'm even reaching out to small accounting firms in hopes of landing some type of experience. Any advice about finance or just life wisdom in general would be greatly appreciated.
Eventually you can report junior/senior GPA on your resume and explain what happened freshman/sophomore.
grades trending up is a lot better than trending down.
