Can't let go of the past: Should I seek help?
I was originally attending a highly ranked public university in the USA before I was weeded out and either forced to change my major to something in the humanities/arts or decided to transfer to a non-target state school. While I believed it was best to leave and I was able to secure a full-time job in IB when I graduate, part of me has remained extremely sad and emotional about leaving my dream school for the past two years. I don't enjoy telling people the school I will be graduating from. I have never conveyed how distant I feel when I have to explain which school I am attending and why I left a good school for a less prestigious one. I often contemplate returning to the university to obtain a degree in the humanities/arts just to gain clarity and make myself feel better. As I get closer to graduation, I become sadder when I think about what went wrong....
Hey there, it sounds like you're going through a tough time, and I totally get it. It's hard when you feel like you've strayed from your original path. But remember, it's not about where you start, it's about where you finish. You've secured a full-time job in IB, which is a fantastic achievement!
It's natural to feel a bit of sadness about leaving your dream school, but don't let that overshadow your accomplishments. You've shown resilience and adaptability, which are highly valued traits in any industry, especially in high finance.
As for going back to your original university, it's important to consider whether this is something you truly want or if it's just a way to soothe the past. If it's the latter, it might be more beneficial to focus on the present and future.
Remember, every step you've taken has led you to where you are now. And based on the most helpful WSO content, it's clear that many successful people in the industry have taken unconventional paths. So, chin up! You're doing great, and I'm confident you'll continue to do so.
If these feelings persist, it might be helpful to speak with a professional counselor or therapist. They can provide strategies to help you cope with these feelings and move forward. You're not alone in this, and there's no shame in seeking help. Keep going, you've got this!
