Career Advice (rising senior engineering student at UMich)

Hi everyone,

I've been a steady lurker on these forums for quite a while now and decided that I should give this a go. I'm trying to break into (management consulting/business/anything not technical engineering related) for a full time position when I graduate and I know recruiting will start when the fall semester rolls around so I wanted your guys' help/opinions on what I should do.

I've decided that I don't want to work some random assembly/manufacturing engineering job out of college and wish I would've had this revelation a little earlier so I wouldn't have been stuck with a low GPA in a major that doesn't interest me (3.1 Mechanical Engineering). I have a pretty solid SAT score (2190) so I'm not "dumb", I just never found any interest in my major and unfortunately trudged through some classes that I should've tried harder in. Though that is still above the average for an engineering student at Michigan, I know I'll have to do some extraordinary networking to land an interview/job.

I've had 2 internships with a tech/consulting company the past two summers working in business analytics & operations and thus have shown my interest in the field and would like to know what your guys' opinions are on what I should be doing to prepare myself before the summer ends and I am back at school for my senior year. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I was a Mechanical Engineer for two years after undergrad before I decided I was a business guy. Spent another year getting my act together for B school, now I'm a business consultant intern. While I don't have much detail in the way of how you should prepare for a transition without any experience, I do happen to know there are a few non-MBB consulting companies that recruit undergrads directly from UM and you should get really comfortable with career services between now and when they show up on campus. PM me if you want to talk further.
