Considering Mid Career Transition into Consulting

Hello - I am in my mid-40s and am exploring a career change into consulting. I have a BBA in Accounting and some Big Four experience in my background as an auditor; I never sat for the CPA Exam although I am qualified to do so (in fact I just registered to take the Exam just to do it and augment my curriculum vitae.) A majority of my recent experience has been as a generalist, running large-scale projects in the developing world (I recently spent almost two years leading and managing a Libyan-American joint venture in Tripoli providing low-profile services, such as warehousing and labor augmentation, for western companies providing contingency power products to the Libyan government.) My background includes business development for defense contractors in both Afghanistan and Iraq (Director-level), but I have documented experience using my technical proficiencies in financial management, accounting and reporting. I also authored a B-Plan and sold a stock subscription for an Internet start-up back in the late 90s, resulting in not much expect two patents for a third party billing system that I assigned to the company upon my departure after a disagreement with the Board. I would be grateful for any guidance and direction especially given my decidedly non-traditional background. I am an effective leader, I have managed every functional area of responsibility for burgeoning business efforts in challenging environments, and I relish critical feedback.
