From Music to Modeling

Hi everyone. I just wanted to put myself out there to see if anyone could relate/have advice to my somewhat unconventional excursion into the world of high finance, specifically investment banking.

So basically I recently received my masters of music from Yale (though during my time there, I really did not have IB on my mind at all). I've decided to go back to school at a reputable public university, double majoring in finance and accounting.

Thats it, in a nutshell.

I was wondering if there was anyone out there who has had a similar transition from a liberal/fine arts background into finance?

Any comments, questions, advice, musings on the meaning of life, etc. would be greatly appreciated and seriously noted!

Thanks!
MS

It sounds like you were scared of the real world so you went to get your Masters, now that is done and you are once again scared of life and want to go back and get a second Bachelor's degree in something practical. I have never heard of someone going from a completely opposite background and getting into "high finance".

To be honest, I'm guessing the choice of IB has to do with the money aspect and if I had to guess, big student loans. Am I close? Are you going to be able to service your new debt load of yet another Bachelor's if you don't land the coveted IB position? Would you be happy in Finance? Over 6 years of college experience and in that time you didn't change your mind and NOW you want to do a 180 and start over?

It sounds like you need to do a lot of soul searching.

I can't comment on the situation, other than to say there's a chance but it will be exceedingly difficult. But I'd like to give everyone a tip. Don't say high finance. No one calls it that. Maybe undergrads but no one in the business will ever say that. Throw monkey shit my way but it's god honest advice.

Ever since posting it I have refrained from figuring out what a 5600 SF place in NYC that looks like that would cost, I'm better off not knowing! I saw your posting the other day about a friend who was trying to get back to Boston and was having difficulty despite his long and successful career. Never would have imagined being that good wouldn't open every door.

Wish you much success in getting there!
