Introduction and Advice
Hi everyone,
I'm a rising junior at the University of Tampa, currently working on my bachelors degree in finance. I have an internship this summer doing FP&A at a portfolio company backed by some smaller P.E firms. I joined WSO to try and get some advice on my career path. I'm a bit overwhelmed with all the possible careers and feel that I won't land a good internship if I don't pick soon. Does anyone a bit older have some advice on how to decide between, IB, wealth management, VC, equity research, etc. I am halfway through Wall Street prep financial modeling course, which is 40ish hours, but I don't even know if I will use these skills. Looking at the roles I listed, it seems each one has its own unique skill sets, and I don't want to waste my time trying to learn about each and never mastering one. Any advice is appreciated.
Cheers
Think about the reasons you went into finance in the first place (besides money), passion for learning about businesses, investing, etc. Then look for positions that align with what interests you most. This will help with future burnout from doing something that doesn’t interest you. Then think long term, is this sustainable long term, is this a stepping stone to become an entrepreneur or other motivations you may have? If you have multiple interests go for all of them and choose based on the opportunities you’re presented. You are early in the process and still have time to get good experience somewhere and do something else ft. I wish you good luck and work hard and it will pay off.
