Introduction - Current active duty army officer

I'm a current active duty Army officer considering a transition to the finance world. I'm 28 years old so I'm a bit late to the game I know but now that I've served the country I feel I've done what I can do as far as military service. I would like to work in Asset Management and have developed a passion for value investing. I have a BA in Economics from a mediocre state school with a decent but not great GPA. I hope to be able to break into the field with with just self study/ networking and not head back for an MBA at this point due to the opportunity cost. We will see but I definitely appreciate the knowledge I've found on this site so far.

Suggest reading 'Margin of Saftey', would be a good interview topic to bring up if people ask you about your interest and I am sure you'll learn a bunch about Value investing.

Also, welcome to WSO

I appreciate it. I actually plan to start reading "Margin of Safety" next week. Right now I'm finishing up "Tap Dancing to Work" featuring Buffett which is a great read so far.

Howdy. My brother is in a similar position... he'll be finishing up his service by the end of the year most likely and wants to make the transition to finance, so I'll tell you what I told him. The easiest route to doing it is to go back and get an MBA, because from there you essentially put yourself on a level playing field with everyone else coming out of business school, and top B-schools love military service.

But if you don't want to go that route, I imagine it's a lot tougher if you don't have a top school on your resume or something. Does your school have an alumni network, particularly military guys could be worth reaching out to.
