Looking to make a career switch

Greetings all --
Intended on going into I-Banking upon completing MBA. Unfortunately graduating in the down economy in 2009 derailed those plans. Ended up in corporate finance figuring it would eventually lead to something worthwhile, but have been stuck in record/score keeping roles instead. Would like to switch career paths and get into I-Banking (or something similar - Transactional Advisory, M&A, etc) but feel I've painted myself into a corner and am basically in no man's land. Based on several conversations, don't have the experience to be brought in without receiving some training, but a bit far removed from school to be considered for the "foot in the door" type job where I could receive some training. Being in Milwaukee doesn't help out in this situation as the opportunities are few, but Chicago is nearby.
Looking for suggestions on approaches to take or what type of targets I should focus on.
