I've been a casual lurker on these forums for some time now, with the occasional post, but I haven't introduced myself as such. I'm studying finance and economics at a Semi-Target, and I prospectively hope to work with a firm with roots in energy (particularly alternative energy).
The past year or so that I've been reading these forums, it seems that many of the posts I've come across have treated experience and life during college as though it's a sort of calculation. Do the members here ever have any regrets about going down an often narrow path in college to end up working jobs that, frankly speaking, have shit lifestyles? Sometimes I feel that the prospect of IBD at a BB is too romanticized by my fellow undergrads. Does anybody ever wish that they spent more time indulging in the "soft" subjects (ie, the arts, philosophy). Sometimes I think whether or not I should've applied to any LACs to get that well rounded education and fresh perspective.
I don't mean for this to act as a vitriolic post, but I'm genuinely curious about whether any regrets have surfaced over a seemingly narrow-focused 4 years. That being said, I can still appreciate employment statistics per major and the fact that some people really do get a rush from number punching and modeling, but at the same time, I'd hope to not hear snide comments such as "The guy who served my coffee yesterday had X arts degree from X University".
College should be first and foremost about career prep. In my opinion, the concept of a liberal arts education is antiquated. In the 1800s someone that wanted to learn/gain an education really had no option but to go to college, where they could surround themselves with the limited number of other educated people in their day.
This is no longer the case. Today we have the internet, widely distributed books, documentaries, etc. that can teach you about any topic that interests you. If you want to learn about art and philosophy, you can do that in your free time.
College is best used for developing the skills that will make you a marketable candidate. If you think that an art class makes you more marketable for whatever career you want, go ahead and take it. Colleges let people go outside of their major to take classes for a reason. If you are interested in art for simple interest and self betterment, then it might be best to pursue it in your free time.
