Pharmacist looking to break into Finance Career
Hey guys, I've been a lurker here for a while now, I've finally created an account here, and nice to meet you all!
In a nutshell, I'm a 25 year old pharmacist looking to break into the Finance world. However, I do not know how and where to start (i.e should I get a CFA, MBA, go back to school for finance degree, or apply for entry level finance positions?), and therefore am here to learn more about this industry, as well to hopefully gain some advice from the knowledgeable people here.
Long story short, it would be much appreciated if anyone can shed some light on the most practical way towards possibly jump-starting a career in finance (or even accounting if it's more realistic), and whether it is really worth it to do so right now. Thanks in advance :)
Pharmacist with low GPA who wants to move into Consulting (Originally Posted: 12/25/2015)
Hi all,
I am new posting here though I have been lurking for several months now. I am 26 years old and hold a BSc Pharmacy degree from outside the U.S and Europe. I graduated with a very low GPA of 2.3. I have no excuses. I did not apply myself at all and was very lapse at the time. I have changed incredibly since then.
I have 1 years' worth of work experience in a laboratory in London. This is not what I want and am fully aware of my shortcomings. I have used this time to look into and decide how I can change my career around. I would like to obtain a BSc Business and Management through distance learning (while still working full time) and graduate with honours and then apply for an MBA from a good school and then move into consulting in London.
I feel very hung up about my BSc degree but am a believer in the 'sunk cost fallacy' and don't wish to waste any more of my time. I am very ambitious and do not want to be a failure. As I currently stand, I see myself as a loser and very much an under-achiever. I fully believe I am capable of a lot more.
I feel this is my best bet given my low GPA and lack of work experience. I would like some constructive criticism please. What are my chances? Is this a viable plan?
I don't think getting another bachelors degree will be useful, particularly from distance learning.
With your pharmacy background, you could be an interesting candidate for ZS, Navigant, or one of the other consulting firms that specializes in healthcare. Networking, meeting people from these firms, and convincing them you have something to bring to the table is important here.
