I've only been actively using LinkedIn for a couple weeks and I've already had several analysts and associates at small funds and boutiques agree me to meet up for coffee (after a few back and forth InMail messages) and offer to deliver my resume to hiring managers.

1) Use LinkedIn to find names of people in desired industry/firm 2) Use firm email format to send networking email 3) ????? 4) Profit

^This. LinkedIn has helped me get most of the connections I have in the industry.

OP, try to reevaluate your LinkedIn strategy.

It's worked wonders for me and actually got me my current internship.

I am using it right now and it is working great. I thought I had 0 alums in finance (non target) but I've found 4-5 today.

i personally got my FT offer and previous internships SOLELY through networking, hard-work, luck and WSO (but mainly networking through LINKEDIN!!!!!!!!!!!)

i really feel bad for you if you dont know how to use linkedin to talk to people coldly. you should learn how to be witty/keep up a convo with a stranger. its a great life skill to have let alone a way to network.

Dude i know plenty of people that dont use linkedin that are employed at very respectable firms and those that DO have linkedin and is well maintained and dont get interviews/offers

But if you think that its largely beneficial to the regular employee (like you and me), than you are sadly mistaken-

LinkedIn is a headhunters/HR/Employee fact checkers wet dream. But if you are smart and nimble, it can work for you...

Linkedin works very well. I have made several appointments with it. Target your market and try not to say anything cheesy.

I think it can be an effective tool for finding the names of analysts/associates at firms that may have gone to your school or a similar school (this is if you are in the process of looking for a FT or SA gig). I've used it a few times for this and then looked up email formats on WSO. Has gotten me a few phone chats with analysts at firms I otherwise had 'in' at.

That said, I don't see much use in having a linkedin profile while in college/'connecting' with interviewers and other people. Many don't check their profiles, and it seems a bit weird to me.

LinkedIn has helped me a great deal. Connected with people I would have never been able to otherwise. Didn't get interviews from it but the ones I did get through traditional means, emailing and calling people that work at that particular company was an incredible help.

Two biggest benefits for me: - If you are in a high turnover industry like banking or consulting, it's a great tool for "Where Are They Now" moments - If you are doing informationals thru official channel, you can use it to dig up some information beforehand and use it to drive discussions in a more friendly direction

If you don't think LinkedIn is useful for networking, you aren't doing it right.

I guess things are really different in the US. You can get an internship or job offer from LinkedIn? When I was cold-calling back in my freshman year, one alumni in Morgan Stanley kindly replied saying that "your time is best spent on studying in the library. Usually, these cold-calling/emailing won't do you any good here."

When used properly, LinkedIn is one of the more powerful networks you can tap into. I actually think most people under-utilize the site. I've cold emailed several higher-ups and many have responded back. This is purely anecdotal in terms of how effective LinkedIn is, but like many on here have said, you have to do it the right way - and the big key here is to send out the right, professionally-formatted email.

And what I always say to others is that you really have nothing to lose. You have everything to gain should it work (e.g., interviews).

The main point of this post was that LinkedIn connections don’t make you connected. Same thing as having 1,000 Facebook friends and sitting at home alone every Saturday night.

AnalystMonkey2769 … Really? I meet people through people, at bars, golf courses and on boats. Mr. eHarmony here seemed to take offense to my low opinion of the online connection hunting. And to the HR comment, after multiple interviews (phone, formal and informational) the interviewers have viewed my LinkedIn. And based on your personal attack at me for criticizing your precious LinkedIn, I would say you are the dull, unemployed and probably friendless person in this thread. Next time you see “Excellent written communication and people skills REQUIRED” on a job app… Go ahead and DQ yourself from that candidate pool.

While I agree OP is very misguided, I THINK something he said was true. You shouldn't use LinkedIn to connect with random MDs out of the blue and send them messages over that? I've never personally done it, but it just seems overbearing and most professionals don't check it that often. Cold Connecting, coined a new term.

LinkedIn has litterally given me 90% of my contacts. I just use it as a person google. I wouldnt have found any alumni without it being from a non-target. Plus, large firms don't usually have "Our Team" pages with everyone's name. So boom, ya plug the fuckin company name and a radius in that bitch and sha bang, you got some contacts to cold email. I will, however, connect with them after I email them and speak with them.

What if they asked where you found their contact details from?
